Salvation Unfolds: Overcoming Evil
We live in a world always looking out for number one—ourselves. Sometimes that means we play nice with others. After all, it’s easier to turn a profit or to get what I want when there is public peace. But many times in this world, we find ourselves competing with one another for the same things, just like Joseph and his brothers fought for their dad’s love. That’s when the gloves come off and things get nasty. Jesus knew this about life in this world. As he spoke to his disciples, he warned them about the self-centeredness of the human heart. The sinful nature corrupts even the conscience when it distorts justice into something I must have instead of something I must uphold. So Jesus presents a counter-cultural idea. Love all your enemies in thought, word, action, and reaction. It seems impossible! For us, it is. But that is precisely what Christ did for us. The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many!
