Losing It All: Losing Perspective
In our Old Testament reading, we see the Lord’s prophet Jeremiah facing rejection —even death threats. Yet, God is still merciful with those who threaten to murder his called servants. In our Gospel reading, Jesus faces similar threats. The Pharisees try to intimidate Christ with rumors of Herod’s opposition. Though these were likely false, Herod was responsible for executing John the Baptist. Jesus would not be intimidated. He was focused on his mission to redeem the world from their sinful rebellion. Yet, even after demonstrating this powerful love, the Apostle Paul tells us many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Some live this way because they are fixated on living in the moment. Others are much more self-disciplined, yet they see no need for Jesus’s suffering and death. But Christ is in control of all things— even his death. By his sacrifice we are saved. By his power we are transformed— body & soul.
